Low-dose aspirin for preventing recurrent venous thromboembolism.

BACKGROUND Patients who have had a first episode of unprovoked venous thromboembolism have a high risk of recurrence after anticoagulants are discontinued. Aspirin may be effective in preventing a recurrence of venous thromboembolism. METHODS We randomly assigned 822 patients who had completed initial anticoagulant therapy after a first episode of unprovoked venous thromboembolism to receive ...

[Aspirin for preventing the recurrence of venous thromboembolism].

BACKGROUND About 20% of patients with unprovoked venous thromboembolism have a recurrence within 2 years after the withdrawal of oral anticoagulant therapy. Extending anticoagulation prevents recurrences but is associated with increased bleeding. The benefit of aspirin for the prevention of recurrent venous thromboembolism is unknown. METHODS In this multicenter, investigator-initiated, doubl...

Risk of recurrence after venous thromboembolism in men and women: patient level meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of sex on the risk of recurrent venous thromboembolism in all patients and in patients with venous thromboembolism that was unprovoked or provoked (by non-hormonal factors). Data source Comprehensive search of electronic databases (Medline, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials) until July 2010, supplemented by review of conference abst...

Literature Highlight: Preventing Recurrent Venous Thromboembolism with Low-Dose Aspirin

Unprovoked venous thromboembolism (VTE) warrants anticoagulant therapy for a brief period of weeks to months. After it is discontinued, the risk of recurrent VTE remains high. Long-term warfarin therapy is highly effective in preventing recurrence, but it has an increased risk of bleeding, and the monitoring requirements make it inconvenient and costly for patients. Low-dose aspirin is a propos...

Warfarin alone or with aspirin was superior to aspirin alone after acute myocardial infarction but increased bleeding.

Main results Analysis was by intention to treat. Both warfarin groups had lower rates for the main composite measure, nonfatal reinfarction, and thromboembolic stroke than the aspirin alone group (table); the 2 warfarin groups did not differ for these outcomes. The 3 groups did not differ for overall mortality. Both warfarin groups had higher rates for nonfatal major bleeding episodes than the ...
